The program, funded through the U.S. Department of Education, provides support for students who exhibit potential and drive to succeed in school, guiding them along their academic journeys through grade school, exploration of higher education and careers with field trips to colleges and universities, and the college admission process.

Ives is also a recipient of the聽聽for academically promising students with financial need who intend to graduate from Polk State and transfer to the University of South Florida to pursue a bachelor鈥檚 degree in STEM. He is pursuing the Polk State Associate in Arts degree with the intent of transferring to study engineering.

鈥淭he Educational Talent Search has been a good way for me to strive toward college and the area I am interested in studying,鈥� Ives explained. 鈥淓veryone at Polk State has been really welcoming and I am really interested in the TURNPIKE Program because of all the tech, innovation, and camaraderie.鈥�

ETS students are also referred to , which provides similar support to underrepresented students. The program helps students strengthen and develop their academic, personal, and self-management skills, and provides support as they navigate the academic environment. TRiO also offers opportunities for students to explore higher education and career options, with visits to universities and career events.

鈥淚t鈥檚 like a family here,鈥� Lopez-Cruz explained about Polk State. The first-generation-in-college student took dual enrollment courses at Polk State while she was in high school. 鈥淎s the first generation in my family to attend college, the process was a little confusing. The Educational Talent Search guided me through that process and it means a lot to me to have the opportunity to continue my education at Polk State.鈥�

A 2009 graduate of Southeast Missouri State University, Koonce earned his bachelor鈥檚 degree in general studies with an emphasis in public relations and sport management. It was ultimately a Christmas gift from Koonce鈥檚 now wife, Chandni Dargan, that prompted him to seriously consider a career in aviation. 鈥淢y wife has been incredibly supportive,鈥� he said. That gift was a discovery flight, his first private flight lesson. 鈥淚 had been doing a little bit of research on the nationwide pilot shortage,鈥� Koonce said. 鈥淚t took one flight, and I was hooked.鈥�

For Koonce, the next step was finding a well-respected program. 鈥淥ne of the neat things about the Polk State program is it鈥檚 (Federal Aviation Administration Part 141)-accredited,鈥� Koonce said. 鈥淯ltimately, I was looking into a place where I could fly year-round 鈥� with the weather. I met with our program director and realized Polk State was the place for me.鈥� Koonce began the Polk State Aerospace Program in January 2021. During his time in the program, Koonce has earned his Private Pilot Certificate, Instrument Rating and Commercial Pilot Certificate. He also served as the Flight Team鈥檚 first officer for ground events, team secretary and social media director. 鈥淚t鈥檚 an excellent group of people,鈥� Koonce said. 鈥淭he camaraderie throughout our team was great. It was a great experience all around, capped off by qualifying for (National Intercollegiate Flying Association) nationals for the first time in our program鈥檚 history.鈥�

As a member of the Polk State Flight Team, Koonce said Carl Valeri, the team鈥檚 coach and a commercial pilot with more than 20 years of experience, served as a mentor. Even before meeting him in person, Koonce had listened to the 鈥淎viation Careers Podcast,鈥� hosted by Valeri, which sparked his interest in Polk State. 鈥淔rom a mentoring standpoint, Carl has been absolutely incredible,鈥� Koonce said. 鈥淗e鈥檚 doing what a lot of us dream of. He鈥檚 so selfless, cares so much and puts so much into it. Without Carl, Polk State doesn鈥檛 have a flight team.鈥� In addition to the Flight Team, Koonce served as a member of the Polk State Aerospace Safety Team and the Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society. Despite leaving the public relations field, Koonce鈥檚 skills in that area remain prevalent, according to Valeri. 鈥淗e鈥檚 amazing at networking,鈥� Valeri said. 鈥淲henever Tyler walks in a room, he鈥檚 someone who everyone engages with. He knows how to listen; he knows how to respond. He speaks well and he really knows his stuff. He鈥檚 going to be very successful.鈥�

To ultimately become an airline pilot, Koonce will have to complete 1,250 flight hours to qualify for Restricted Airline Transport Pilot (R-ATP) minimums 鈥� a number that is reduced from the standard 1,500 hours with Polk State鈥檚 Part 141 certification. That鈥檚 an endeavor he鈥檚 ready to take on with more than 300 flight hours already in his logbook. 鈥淚 feel like I was properly prepared at Polk State,鈥� he said. 鈥淭he results are there professionally for our alumni. We have a lot of people from the Polk State Aerospace Program doing great things in the aviation industry.鈥� According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the median annual pay for commercial pilots is about $100,000. The number of needed commercial pilots is expected to grow by 13% from 2020 to 2030 鈥� faster than the average for all occupations. 鈥淚 would encourage anyone who has ever thought about being a pilot to give Polk State a serious look,鈥� Koonce said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 affordable and an all-around great program. At the onset of the pandemic, many classes were switched to a remote setting and a number of healthcare clinical rotations were interrupted.

As programs faced pitfalls during the transition, two of Polk State鈥檚 Health Sciences programs experienced a mandatory need of masks for students to perform their clinical rotations. The grant provided 28 students from the Cardiovascular Technology Program and the Respiratory Care Program with N95 respirators and fit tests. Students from these programs were able to successfully complete their clinical rotations without the worry of obtaining the necessary required equipment thanks to the GiveWell Community Foundation support.

In addition to a need for equipment, students in their final year of the Respiratory Care program encountered fully remote training when they would have normally been in a classroom. The students did not receive the same experience as they would have in-person and were offered a refresher course prior to the National Board Exam to ensure that they received the imperative in-person training needed to succeed. The grant covered the balances of 13 students to participate in the course.

The sponsoring Polk State Foundation reached its goal of filling all 32 four-member teams for the clay-shooting event at the Florida FFA Leadership Training Center in Haines City. The nonprofit Polk State Foundation supports athletics through various means, including housing.

鈥淕etting our student-athletes in front of the donors is always special,鈥� said Jeff Baldwin, Vice President of Resource Development and Executive Director of the Polk State Foundation. 鈥淚t gives us the opportunity to connect 鈥楢鈥� and 鈥楤,鈥� which is the most impactful part of the event. Brandon Giles, head basketball coach at Polk State, said he likes the fact that the event brings people together. He noted that it not only allows donors to meet athletes, but also members of different athletic programs to take part in a combined event. 鈥淎t Polk State, we鈥檙e a community-driven college,鈥� he said. 鈥淎ny time we can get together with stakeholders in our community and get to know each other and interact, that鈥檚 a great thing.鈥�

The clay-shooting competition is among three signature events that the Polk State Foundation sponsors annually. Craig Hosking, of Lakeland, also part of the Pre-Con Construction of Florida team, said he鈥檚 participating to show his appreciation for the student-athletes. 鈥淎thletics in education is a must,鈥� he said. 鈥淎thletes carry a special aptitude to balance school and sports. It鈥檚 nice to be able to let them know that we support them.鈥�

Conversely, Senior King, Director of Development and Communications for the Polk State Foundation, said hosting the event is also a way to thank the Athletics Department鈥檚 donors. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a way to say thank you to the community by giving individuals the opportunity to come out and spend the day doing something they enjoy,鈥� King said. 鈥淚t鈥檚 also important for our student-athletes to meet people who do this to support them.鈥�

Baldwin added that the event is an opportunity to see athletes outside of their competitive element. The event has taken place since 2012 and has raised more than $100,000.
